New PMP exam is live: Business Environment rises to 26% of questions

PMI's updated PMP exam went live on July 9, 2026. It follows a new Examination Content Outline that cuts the weight of People and Process and adds AI and sustainability to project scenarios.

What changes

PMI updated the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam in July 2026. The new exam follows the PMP Examination Content Outline dated July 2026. PMI says the update adds AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement to project-based scenarios and shifts the focus to outcomes, value and business impact.

The domain weights move a lot. People falls from 42% to 33%. Process falls from 50% to 41%. Business Environment rises from 8% to 26%, so about one question in four now comes from that domain.

The outline lists 26 tasks: 8 in People, 10 in Process and 8 in Business Environment. The Business Environment tasks are project governance, project compliance, managing and controlling changes, removing impediments and managing issues, planning and managing risk, continuous improvement, supporting organizational change, and evaluating changes in the external business environment.

Sustainability appears inside several tasks. Examples in the outline include sustainability as a critical information requirement, as part of cost of quality, as a compliance requirement and as a risk to manage.

When it applies

The updated exam has been live since July 9, 2026. PMI says all exams scheduled on or after that date use the new exam.

The exam still has 180 questions. Total testing time is 240 minutes, or 4 hours, including two 10-minute breaks. You can still test at a Pearson VUE test center or online. PMI says the scoring method has not changed.

About 40% of the items represent predictive approaches. The other 60% are split between adaptive or agile and hybrid approaches. These approaches appear in all three domains, not in one domain only.

Training hours and eligibility

You still need 35 hours of project management training to apply. PMI says training requirements do not change until the end of 2026, so hours you have already completed still count. An active CAPM certification also covers the 35 hours, but you still need to meet the education and experience requirements.

From December 1, 2026, live training hours count only if the course is delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced courses can come from any organization. Training completed before December 1, 2026 stays eligible under the current rules.

PMI also lists expanded eligibility for apprenticeships and training, with a 10-year window for experience.

What it means for your study

Map your plan to the 26 tasks in the 2026 outline. Give Business Environment much more time than before. At 26%, it is now more than three times its old weight of 8%.

PMI says the core principles and approaches of the exam remain the same, so you can keep using material you have already started. Fill the gaps in governance, compliance, change control, risk and organizational change, and practice scenarios that involve AI, sustainability and value delivery.

PMI notes that the outline differs from the PMBOK Guide and that the exam uses scenario-based questions. Let the outline, not a single book, decide what you cover.

If you already hold the PMP, nothing changes for you. Your certification stays valid, and you still need 60 PDUs in each three-year cycle.
